About SI

Soroptimist International is a worldwide service organization of women in business and professions. Soroptimists are committed to a world in which women and girls are able to achieve their individual and collective potential, to realize their aspirations and to exercise an equal voice in creating strong, peaceful communities. We work in our communities and beyond to improve the lives of women and girls.

Since the first club was founded in Oakland, California in 1921, Soroptimists have acted as advocates for the causes and rights of women and girls at local, national and international levels. Today, there are more than 75,000 members in the four Federations of Soroptimist International. With some 34,000 members across 62 countries in Europe, Middle East, Africa and the Caribbean Soroptimist International of Europe (SIE) is the largest Federation.

Through its work at all the major centres of the United Nations as a non-governmental organization with general consultative status to the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), Soroptimist International of Europe gives women and girls a voice in international decision-making and policy setting. To raise awareness of women’s issues and to give greater weight to its advocacy efforts, SIE has a representative with participatory status at the Council of Europe in Strasbourg, is a member of the European Women’s Lobby in Brussels and is represented at the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe in Vienna and Prague.

The national Unions and Clubs of Soroptimist International of Europe initiate, support, fundraise for and/or implement more than 4500 projects for some € 12 million per year. We aim to increase access to education, aid economic empowerment, eliminate violence against women and girls, ensure access to healthcare and address the specific needs of women and girls by improving environmental sustainability.
